Delgado splits Sunday Duo to close Opening Weekend

Delgado split its Sunday doubleheader against Pensacola State in the final day of its 2012 Opening Weekend at the “Rags” Scheuermann Memorial Invitational on Sunday at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

In game one, Pensacola State took an early 1-0 lead with Gavin Patton’s homerun in the first. Delgado answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning with Logan Jones’ RBI single to score Sean McMullen who had reached on a leadoff double and Angelo Bruno, who had walked.  The Dolphins would score two more runs in the fourth on back to back RBI singles by Sean McMullen and Bubby Riley. Pensacola scored a solo run in the seventh on Frankie Ratcliff’s RBI single to close the scoring in a 4-2 Delgado victory. Cody Deckwa picked up his first win of the season with Corey Thomas earning the save in relief.

In the second game, Pensacola State scored a run in the first, three in the second and fourth and two in the fifth to take the 9-3 win over Delgado. Delgado scored a run in the second on Tony Fortier-Bensen’s RBI-single that scored Brady Williamson, who had reached on a walk. The Dolphins would score two additional runs in the bottom of the seventh on Manny Kurki-Fox’s RBI-double and Cameron Hoffman’s sacrifice fly. Tre’ Girod picked up his first loss of the season on the mound.

With the split, Delgado goes 3-2 overall in their opening weekend.
